Moving Day for Howe House

Today the historic Richard Howe House will be moved from it's current location to a spot by the Erie Canal. The effort to save the house of the Resident Engineer of the canal has been going on since back when it housed a tattoo parlor. Now the space is designated for development as housing for the student market and various public and private entities have chipped in to move it instead of razing it.

This shot was taken with my phone as we walked to an Aeros game Friday night. The actual move is set to begin around 11:00 this morning and, by reports, will proceed v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y.

I've asked around and not gotten a good answer from anyone -- why is saving this house such a big deal? I support historic preservation, but is it really that big of a deal to save the house of a canal engineer, especially given the time and money that are going into it?

I don't mean for that to sound as snarky as it probably does -- I'm just puzzled by the whole thing. Thoughts?

Amen Dave. I don't get off being critical but...

Just one more thing Akron is spending TAX PAYER $$ on that no one will go to. Like the downtown library & Inventure Place. Think they will sell more nothside lofts with the howe house preserved???

Does anyone know if this was done by an outside contractor? Maybe at least the money would stay in the community?

There are many of us in the community that are working to create and preserve JOBS. We get no, ok VERY LITTLE, assistance from the city.

Want to move an old, crumbling house that used to be a tattoo parlor?? Here's the City's checkbook.

Someone please tell me I'm wrong...

We are not trying to cover 100% of the packing supplies, but only the most popular that are used by movers and that you can and should expect to find in a moving truck: Blankets, Boxes, paper, bubble wrap and Shrink wrap, plastic covers. moving company
